Although the H1N1 virus activity has decreased, the virus is still active in Minnesota and continues to cause illness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices continues to recommend that everyone especially children be vaccinated against 2009 H1N1 virus as soon as possible. It is also recommended to still receive the vaccination even if your child has had any flu like illness or has been told they have had possible H1N1.
H1N1:
- H1N1 influenza vaccine will be given in one dose for people 10 years of age and older and in two doses for children 6 months to 9 years of age.
- Visit www.hpcmc.com to recieve important updates and H1N1 vaccine information when it is available.
- Pregnant women, people who live with and care for children younger than 6 months, healthcare and emergency services personnel, all people 6 months to 24 years old and people aged 24-64 who have health conditions that make them more susceptible to complications from influenza are encouraged to get the vaccination.
- The vaccine may be available at first in limited quantities. Depending upon supply and demand, the Centers for Disease Control have established that priority will be give to pregnant women, people who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age, health care and emergency medical services personnal with direct patient contact, children 6 months to 4 years and children 5-18 who have chronic medical conditions.
- The H1N1 vaccine doesn't replace the seasonal flu vaccine; it's intended to be used alongside the seasonal flu vaccine. Patients may recieve both vaccines on the same day. However, patients can't get two flu mists so people who get the flu mist for the seasonal flu, must get an H1N1 injection or vice versa. People can get two injections.
